I think these might run more on the blackish mark, but if it's a real dark black it would indicate it is running rich which could explain the back fire. Definately shouldn't be wet (sign of plug fouling). As for the filter.

I got the gunk off, but was wondering if there anyone has a picture of a good one. I have a feeling all that corrosion means the contacts for the sending unit disintegrated....
