My recommendation would be to use power weapons that are good at clearing trash enemies like Gjallarhorn or a decent machine gun. You also want scavenger/ammo finder perks for your power weapon as this will save your but. I alternated between stasis and void for the campaign.

i think playing that encounter with 2 or 3 people, even though it obviously scales a bit, would do wonders to take some aggro off of you as a solo player and that would simplify it quite a bit. but having a few dozen enemies constantly spawning in and shooting at you everytime you spawn made this rather rough.

So what you can do is stagger, quickly charge your grenade, swap to heavy, fire off 2-3 shots, then quickly back to your hand cannon to keep damaging to prevent regen and go down the next stagger. Scout rifles are a must for us average players. With most activities, you can rush in with an SMG and go nuts.
