Worked fine with the key button, but the button on the trunk lid would not work. Tried a number of times. Made an appointment to take it to the dealer, and then it started to work fine.
There are a few different ways to open the trunk from the back seat of a Chevy Malibu. One way is to use the key fob. And the only way to fold down the seats is to open the trunk. The only ways to open the trunk are through the fob or the button on the back of the trunk over the license plate. The only problem is, you need the fob to be able to press the button and open it.

I searched eBay and found a used replacement for $54. pulled the carpet and noticed the trunk button was not making a noise when I pushed it.
