Colt built the King Cobra to compete with the 686/586. The Python is more of a custom gun with a lot of fine tuning and was not as durable as the 686/586. Also, back when Colt made Pythons and King Cobras the 686/586 was a 6-shot revolver as well. S&W came out with the 7-shot later.

The King Cobra is the last version of Colt's "J" frame revolver that started with the Trooper Mark 3 of 1969. The Trooper Mk 3/King Cobra was to be Colt's "budget" priced gun. The Mark III/King Cobra revolver is a TOTALLY different firearm then the Python.

Got the 2020 Python 4.25" barrel with Deer Hollow Gen 3 replacement grips (didn't really care for the factory Altamont grips). The HKS PYA works on mine but just barely and not great at all. From my perspective the HKS DS speed loader works a lot better. I bought the DS for use on the new Cold King Cobra.

Mine shoots well enough, but the King Cobra and it's close cousin, the Anaconda were not some of Colt's best efforts. The King Cobra was a strong revolvers, but the action isn't anything to write home about. They were built specifically to compete with the 686 on price, but it's nowhere near as nice of a revolver as the Smith.
