IMO the best resort skiing nearby is Lost Trail (best terrain, least crowded, cheapest). There's decent BC all over but it depends on how much you want to skin and whether or not you want sled access. Lolo Pass, the Bitterroots, The Missions, are all good options. One thing I found during the summers is MSN Weather has a great map that shows smoke and fire events. Click on "open map" and there is a toggle box for smoke/fire, can see where its coming from. Also all the fireplaces going, especially in the higher-elevation neighborhoods, made worse for town if there's little wind.
Out of the 3 I would say Missoula has the best weather, but in Montana its all relative. Bozeman and Helena are on the dry side of the mountain ranges, so they will still get a tooon of snow, but it tends to be a little colder and dryer. Missoula is the wetest of the 3 and gets the most rain also.
