Nuclearcraft fission reactors don't really go boom. If they overheat a meltdown happens, but that just means that parts of it will turn to lava. So as long as you have the reactor in a pit, the worst that can happen is you'll lose the reactor itself. Your base will always be safe. To control the heat, the method solthar described is fail-safe.

Nuclearcraft reactor has CRAZY rads around it. I just built my first fission reactor, turned it on and had to go for a few minutes, then i come back and it has a crazy amount of radiation around it, and i just keep dying to the radiation. Afsik, but I've never used the mod to make a reactor, so take my advice with a handful of salt.
