Weirdly, its actually better to take moderately armored than to take heavy armor feat because dwarves don't get proficiency with a shield and the heavy armor feat doesn't give it while moderately armored does so you can take moderately armored and get +2 ac from wearing a shield vs +1 AC from wearing plate instead of half plate.
