Can anyone help decode the serial number? 6K232XX. The smooth back strap is definitely a Model 58 feature. A real tell on this gun is the juncture between the barrel and frame. The Model 58 frame isn't grooved for a barrel rib and is also lower than the barrel rib on a target sighted barrel. I have a Model 58 that was machined for an adjustable rear sight and a Model 57 barrel installed.

In particular, the pistol length gas system with a 16in barrel is best for shooting subsonic ammo. It looks like a Mod M&P 38 Hand Ejector. That S/N would have shipped from the factory 1906-1909. It appears to have been refinished but not by S&W at some point. A good cleaning and treatment for any rusting and it should make a good shooter.
