My personal experience is only with the VCM tuner 2. I have a 2013 and 2012 touring that I installed mine on. They have performed flawlessly. Well worth the extra cost. Second fill up I got 8.9 l/100 kms or 26.4 MPG. This month, same route I got 8.7 l/100 kms or 27.2 MPG. So, while its not scientifically conclusive evidence, I think you can say that the *relationship* between VCM enabled and VCM disabled is likely a fairly small one. ECT1 is the temp reading of coolant exiting the heads (entering the hot tank of the radiator). Those VCM deactivation devices send a +/-165F ECT1 signal to “trick” ECU instead of the actual 188F-194F ECT1. That’s the way I understand it. I observe ECT2 being 40-50 degrees below ECT1 when moving and/or efans on.
