Personally I believe the 42re is a reliable transmission. It doesn't really seem to have any common issues, maybe bad solenoids. Mine has 231,000, seems fine. Use the correct fluid, keep them cool, use O/D off when towing anything. Enjoy. Unfortunately if someone has already abused it there isnt much you can do now.

Biggest advantage is the elimination of 23+ years of old wires and sensors that may or may not be working correctly.
