In manual mode, I can stay in 5th, and it shifts “ok” I can feel some slippage between shifts. It shifts all the way to 5th and no trouble codes.

I have a 6-speed automatic transmission. The transmission went to 4th and skidded the tires significant enough to create smoke from the tires. Downshifting from 6th to 4th at 65 (or even 75+) mph shouldn't cause the tires to lock up. It might cause a 1500 +/- rpm jump, but that should be nowhere close to tire lockup.
