I changed the launch as Linux to install the Linux version of SMAPI, installed SMAPI and then the mods; the log box appears and everything seems to be fine there, but when I launch the game it just starts as vanilla...

Download the latest version of SMAPI (see a pictorial guide ). Extract the .zip file somewhere (but not in your game folder!). Right-click install on Mac.command and choose open. Just copy the mods you want into the Mods folder. I only use 2 mods, NPC map locations and Lookup Anything, and they work with achievements without a problem.
